Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra has announced the extension of the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, with the support of the central government, reported PTI.

Addressing the media, Mohapatra questioned the earlier plan under the previous BJD government, which proposed the metro line from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia.

“What will people do after arriving at Trisulia?” he asked.

Highlighting the pressing need for enhanced connectivity, the minister added, “So, we have decided to expand it to Cuttack covering the bus terminal and SCB Medical College and Hospital where a large number of people are visiting daily.”

A special committee comprising top officials, including Principal Secretary Usha Padhee and technical experts, has been formed to identify the optimal route for the proposed extension.

Their findings has led to the ongoing preparation of a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Mohapatra further confirmed that the central government will now co-finance the project, ensuring faster implementation.

He assured that the metro extension would be pursued on a priority basis under the new government led by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.

The original Phase-I of the metro project, sanctioned at Rs 6,225 crore, was to cover a 26 km stretch from BPIA to Trisulia.

Construction began on 20 November 2023, with completion targeted for 2027.
