Patna Set To Launch Eco-Friendly Water Metro Service Connecting Key Ghats

Patna is preparing to launch a state-of-the-art water metro service, with operations set to commence between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Department of Tourism and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

The MoU was formally inked by Sunil Kumar Singh, chairman of IWAI, and Nand Kishore, managing director of the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC), representing the tourism department, Times of India reported.

Officials described the project, valued at Rs 908 crore, as a landmark step towards developing a tourism-friendly urban water transport system that promises to be safe, modern, and environmentally sustainable.

The service will feature hybrid electric catamaran vessels, such as the ‘MV Nishadraj’, designed to operate in both battery and hybrid modes, ensuring zero carbon emissions.

Each vessel will be fully air-conditioned and accommodate roughly 100 passengers, including space for two wheelchair users, reflecting a commitment to accessibility and comfort.

Bihar Tourism Minister Raju Kumar Singh hailed the initiative as a major achievement that will significantly boost tourism in the city.

Tourism Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh said that the initial route will link Digha Paryatan Ghat to Kangan Ghat, with intermediate stops at NIT Ghat and Gai Ghat.

A trial run is expected to take place soon, officials added.

Looking ahead, the tourism department plans to identify 10 additional locations for future expansion, a move expected to transform Patna’s water-based transport, reduce pollution, and shorten travel times.

The city is among 18 nationwide selected cities to benefit from the development of efficient urban water transport networks, signalling a bold step in integrating modern, eco-friendly mobility into urban tourism and daily commuting.
