In a forthcoming book, 'Inshallah Bangladesh: The Story of an Unfinished Revolution', former Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has alleged that the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was a “perfect CIA plot,” claiming that Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman was “in the CIA’s pockets” and “backstabbed” her, News18 reported.

The book, authored by Deep Halder, Jaideep Mazumdar, and Sahidul Hasan Khokon, quotes Kamal saying, “It was a perfect CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) plot hatched over a long period of time to overthrow Hasina. We did not know the CIA had Waker in its pocket.”

He further alleged that the country’s key intelligence agencies “did not warn the prime minister that Waker had decided to betray her,” suggesting that “their top bosses were also involved in this plot.”

When asked why the US would push for Hasina’s removal, Kamal said, “The first is to not have too many powerful heads of state in South Asia. Modi, Xi, Hasina… American interests are best served with weaker governments. But there was a more immediate reason – St Martin’s Island.”

Referring to Hasina’s earlier remarks, the book notes she had alleged pressure from Washington to hand over the island in exchange for political stability.

Kamal compared Hasina’s downfall to the Mahabharata’s Abhimanyu, saying, “Like Abhimanyu was trapped from all sides and then felled in the war by his own, Waker tied up with the fundamentalist forces in Bangladesh to bring Hasina down.”

He claimed that Pakistan’s ISI had infiltrated the Jamaat-e-Islami and orchestrated violence in June 2024, while General Waker assured Hasina that the army would “handle the situation.”

Kamal added, “Sheikh Hasina had trusted Waker that evening. You know what happened the next day.”
