A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court against the nationwide rollout of 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol (E20), arguing that millions of vehicles are not compatible with the new fuel, The Times of India reported.

The petition, filed by advocate Akshay, has sought directions to the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to ensure ethanol-free petrol (E0) is made available at all fuel stations.

It also urged for clear labelling of ethanol content at dispensing units so consumers are fully aware of what they are purchasing.

The plea contends that cars and two-wheelers manufactured before 2023, as well as some newer BS-VI models, are not designed for high ethanol blends.

It highlighted engine corrosion, reduced fuel efficiency, higher repair bills, and insurance claim rejections linked to ethanol-related damage.

The petition also compared global practices, noting that in the US and EU, ethanol-free petrol remains widely available with transparent labelling.

In India, however, only ethanol-blended fuel is currently sold, with no mandatory disclosure of ethanol percentage at pumps.

India has accelerated its transition to E20 as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions and reduce crude oil imports.

Initially planned for 2030, the target for nationwide E20 availability has been advanced to 2025. Currently, most pumps sell E10 (10 per cent ethanol), while E20 is being gradually introduced in select regions.
