In a significant boost to India’s electronics manufacturing sector, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday (10 January) inaugurated Syrma SGS Technology’s new laptop assembly line in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The facility, located in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), marks an expansion of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative from mobile phones to IT hardware, including laptops.

Expansion of Manufacturing Capabilities

The new assembly line has an initial production capacity of 100,000 laptops annually, which is scalable to 1 million units within 1-2 years.

Syrma SGS, which operates four units in Chennai, has begun laptop production in its third facility.

At the event, Vaishnaw emphasised the need to develop India’s electronic component ecosystem, aligning with the nation’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

"We must work meticulously to ensure that the electronic component ecosystem is also developed in the coming time. This will not only drive a major growth story for India but also align with our vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, fostering self-reliance and strengthening our position in the global electronics manufacturing landscape," Vaishnaw said.

The project falls under the PLI 2.0 scheme for IT hardware and showcases India’s growing expertise in high-value electronics production.

Key Features of the Facility

  • Global Collaboration: Syrma SGS has partnered with Micro-Star International (MSI), a Taiwanese technology company, to produce laptops for domestic and international markets.

  • Employment Opportunities: The facility is expected to generate 150-200 specialised jobs in electronics manufacturing by FY26, contributing to both regional and national economic growth.

  • World-Class Standards: Laptops produced will meet international quality benchmarks, reflecting India’s advancing technical and manufacturing capabilities.

Electronics Sector Growth

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has seen significant growth, with production rising from Rs 2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 9.8 lakh crore in 2024.

Mobile phone manufacturing has reached Rs 4.4 lakh crore, with exports of Rs 1.5 lakh crore.

Notably, 98 per cent of mobile phones used in India are now domestically manufactured, making smartphones the fourth-largest export item.
