Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada, for the G7 Summit on Monday evening (16 June), marking his first visit to the country since 2015. He will address the G7 Outreach Session today, Tuesday (17 June) and will conduct bilateral meetings, reported The Times Of India.
During his 23-hour stay, Modi will meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also possible. However, clarity on a formal bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump was unavailable as of Monday evening (16 June).
This will be India's 12th G7 Outreach Session, and PM Modi's sixth. India has consistently received invitations to the G7 since 2019, signifying the economically advanced nations' recognition of India's importance. Indian government sources emphasised that India's economy now surpasses those of at least three G7 members: France, Italy, and Canada.
"India in 2023 concluded its G20 presidency and is a strong voice of the Global South. India has always brought the issues of the Global South to the fore during its interventions made at the previous G7 summits," an official stated.
At the last G7 Summit in Apulia in 2024, PM Modi joined other invited nations to discuss vital topics including AI, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean.
PM Modi is expected to raise the issue of terrorism again, seeking to gather support for India's campaign to isolate Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack.
