Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (3 June) reached out to leaders of the northeastern states to assess the impact of relentless rainfall and flooding across the region.
He spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla, assuring full support from the Centre to manage the crisis.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X, "A short while ago, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam. I briefed him on how continuous rainfall in Assam and adjoining states has led to flooding and impacted many lives. I also apprised him of the relief operation undertaken by the state government."
He added, "The Hon'ble PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts. Grateful for his guidance and unwavering support to the people of Assam."
Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang also took to X, expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister’s support. "...I extend my heartiest gratitude for your kind concern and support regarding the landslide and flood situation in the state... Thank you once again for your kind concern, Sir."
The flood situation in Assam remains grim, with 11 reported deaths, six due to flooding and five from landslides. Over 5.15 lakh people across 22 districts have been affected, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
In Sikkim’s Mangan district, the state has declared the damage caused by incessant rain since May 28 as a disaster under the Disaster Management Act. Three army personnel died and six went missing after a landslide hit an army camp at Chaten.
In Manipur, joint rescue efforts are underway to evacuate stranded staff and students at JNIMS in Imphal, where severe waterlogging has occurred. Flash floods from overflowing rivers and breached embankments have affected over 56,000 people in Manipur, damaging 10,477 houses.
