PM Modi Inaugurates Redeveloped 524-Year-Old Tripura Sundari Temple In Udaipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (22 September) inaugurated the redeveloped Tripura Sundari Temple, a 524-year-old Shaktipeetha at Udaipur in Tripura’s Gomati district, the Indian Express reported.

He offered puja and toured the upgraded complex, accompanied by Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, former CM Biplab Kumar Deb, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and BJP state chief Rajib Bhattacharya.

Modi arrived at Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport around 2 pm and flew by helicopter to Palatana, where he was welcomed with a traditional dance. He reached the temple at 3.30 pm amid tight security as thousands of devotees waited outside bamboo barricades.

The shrine, among 51 revered Shaktipeethas, has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs 52 crore under the Tourism Ministry’s PRASAD scheme, with an additional Rs 7 crore from the state government.

The project includes a three-storeyed structure with halls, dormitories, stalls, and a redesigned ‘naatmandir’, along with a Shaktipeetha Park featuring replicas of all 51 shrines, food courts, souvenir shops, guest accommodation, and a museum.

Believed to be built in 1501 by Maharaj Dhanya Manikya Bahadur after a “divine commandment,” the temple stands on a turtle-shaped hillock, 60 km from Agartala.

Legend says the idol of Goddess Tripura Sundari was brought from Chittagong, while another deity, “Chhoti Ma,” was discovered during a nearby pond excavation.

Priests from Kannauj were invited to conduct rituals, a tradition maintained by their descendants.

Redevelopment efforts began in 2018 with the creation of the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple Trust. The upgraded complex is expected to boost tourism in the Northeast and enhance facilities for lakhs of devotees, especially during Diwali when over two lakh pilgrims visit the historic shrine.
