Ahead of the likely announcement of the Delhi Assembly election dates next week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several significant infrastructure projects in the national capital.
The events, scheduled for 3 and 5 January will focus on enhancing Delhi’s transport and housing infrastructure.
The key projects include the inauguration of the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar, the handing over of government flats in Sarojini Nagar, the opening of a 13-km section of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor connecting New Ashok Nagar in Delhi to Sahibabad in Ghaziabad, and the foundation-laying of the Rithala-Kundli metro line.
Times of India reports indicate that eight events, including a public meeting, are planned for Friday (3 January). “We are expecting some major announcements to boost the city's infrastructure, particularly in the road and transport sector, and major social welfare schemes,” a source revealed. The BJP has been highlighting the poor maintenance of Delhi’s roads to target the AAP government.
Around one-fourth of the 1,700 completed flats in the redeveloped Sarojini Nagar government housing complex are expected to be allotted to central government employees during Friday’s event.
The World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar, a flagship commercial project of the central government, has reportedly sold or leased all its commercial spaces.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister is likely to inaugurate the Ashok Nagar-Sahibabad stretch of the RRTS corridor, which will significantly improve rail connectivity between Meerut and the national capital. Officials noted that this new section will reduce travel time to nearly an hour.
Initially scheduled for inauguration last Sunday, the event was postponed due to the seven-day national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 26 December.
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the Rithala-Kundli metro line on Sunday. Approved by the Union Cabinet on 6 December, this 26.5-km corridor is part of Delhi Metro's Phase-IV project and aims to improve connectivity between Delhi and Haryana. The Rs 6,230-crore project is slated for completion in four years.
