PM Modi Visits Semiconductor Plant In Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (30 August) toured a semiconductor facility in Sendai, Miyagi prefecture in Japan, a day after India and Japan agreed to enhance cooperation in the critical technology sector, The New Indian Express reported.

PM Modi was joined by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and the two leaders travelled by bullet train to Sendai, located more than 300 km from Tokyo.

In Sendai, Ishiba hosted a lunch for PM Modi, attended by the governor of Miyagi and other dignitaries.

According to a statement, PM Modi’s visit to Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi) underscored the synergy between India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem and Japan’s expertise in the field.

TEL Miyagi, a major Japanese semiconductor firm, has proposed collaborations with India.

During the visit, PM Modi was briefed on TEL’s role in the global semiconductor chain, its advanced manufacturing, and its current and planned partnerships with India.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit offered both leaders a practical view of opportunities for collaboration in semiconductor supply chain, fabrication, and testing.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation, building on the Japan–India semiconductor supply chain partnership, the Industrial Competitiveness Partnership, and the Economic Security Dialogue.

The joint visit also highlighted the shared India–Japan vision of building secure, resilient, and trusted semiconductor supply chains.

PM Modi thanked Ishiba for accompanying him on the visit and reiterated India’s readiness to work closely with Japan in the sector, the MEA added.

On Friday (29 August) , PM Modi and Ishiba held wide-ranging talks that also addressed semiconductor cooperation.

PM Modi had arrived in Tokyo on Friday for a two-day visit.
