Probe Panel Led By Retired HC Judge To Investigate Violence in Manipur, Peace Committee To Be Formed: Union Home Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that a retired High Court judge will lead a probe panel to investigate the violence in Manipur that resulted in the death of 80 people and injuries to many others.

During his visit to Manipur, Shah stated in a press conference that the government aims to restore peace and facilitate the return of refugees to their residences. He further stated that the BJP-led state government has brought stability and progress to Manipur.

Shah announced the creation of a peace committee led by Manipur's CM Biren Singh, consisting of all political party representatives and both the warring sides in the conflict.

The home minister promised an unbiased probe into the Manipur violence and declared a compensation of 5 lakh rupees to be given jointly by the Centre and Manipur government to those who have lost family members.

Criticizing the order from Manipur High Court that directed the state government to recommend ST status for the Meitei community, Shah called it a rushed decision that had resulted in conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Shah recently visited relief camps where both Kukis and Meiteis were housed, and promised assistance to ensure their prompt and secure return to home. He held meetings with Kuki leaders in Kangpokpi and Moreh, guaranteeing their safety and provision of necessary supplies like emergency helicopter services.

Amidst the turmoil in Manipur due to clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 3, Shah is currently in the region for a four-day visit. The violence has reportedly resulted in the loss of 80 individuals, with ongoing incidents of each community burning down the other's houses.
