After completing a double-decker bridges with a metro route on top at Karve Road and Ganeshkhind Road, the Pune municipal body has now proposed ten more such bridges to tackle growing traffic congestion in the city, Indian Express reported.

The Pune Muncipal Corporation (PMC) will reportedly collaborate with the agency implementing the metro project in the city for the double decker bridge.

The PMC will join hands with the agency implementing the metro project in the city for the double decker bridge.

In this joint model, the municipal body will reportedly bear the cost of the road flyover on the first floor while the top floor will be constructed with funds for metro projects.

The operational double-decker at Nal Stop on Karve road was jointly built by PMC and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro).

Meanwhile, the the double-decker bridge on Ganeshkhind road is being jointly constructed by PMC and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which is developing the metro rail route from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar.

New sites identified for these double-decker bridges reportedly include Mundhwa Mahatma Phule chowk, Kalubai chowk on Solapur road, Dandekar Pul chowk, Wagholi Awhalwadi chowk, Ambedkar chowk in Warje, Kothrud Bus depot in Bhusari colony, Golibar Maidan chowk, Viman Nagar chowk, Wanowrie Fatimanagar chowk and Ravidarshan in Manjari, IE reported.

PMC is seeking funding support to construct the lower traffic deck, estimating costs at Rs 60 crore for Mundhwa Mahatma Phule chowk, Rs 35 crore for Kalubai Chowk, and Rs 45 crore for Dandekar Pul Chowk.

“The double decker bridges in parts of the city have been proposed on routes of the elevated metro. This has been done as no infrastructure project can be taken up after construction of elevated metro routes on city roads from where the metro route is passing,” Yuvraj Deshmukh, chief engineer of PMC was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

He highlighted that metro structures—with large supporting pillars—may hinder future infrastructure upgrades, making integrated flyover planning essential before the metro lines are completed.

PMC is conducting a feasibility study to assess the practicality of ascertain the use of taking up the flyover bridge construction with metro route, Deshmukh stated.

Pune Metro executive director Hemant Sonawane said that they are "always ready to construct flyovers for the civic body wherever it is necessary".

He noted that using the same pillars for both decks cuts costs for PMC and preempts future road infrastructure hurdles, making advanced planning a smart move.
