Pune’s much-anticipated Phase 2 Metro expansion is awaiting the Union government's approval, with proposed routes covering a combined length of 61 kilometres across the city and its outskirts, Times of India reported.

State finance minister Ajit Pawar, during his budget speech yesterday, announced that two significant proposals — Khadakwasla-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Warje — have already been submitted to the Centre.

The Maharashtra government is aggressively pushing for Metro connectivity enhancements not only in Pune but also in Mumbai and Nagpur.

Pawar stated that 23.2km of Metro lines are likely to begin in Pune this year, signalling a major step forward in the city’s transportation infrastructure.

Additionally, four other routes — Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, Ramwadi to Wagholi, Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor, and Hadapsar to Saswad Road — are awaiting the green light.

These projects form the backbone of Phase 2, aiming to extend connectivity to growing suburban pockets and decongest Pune’s core.

Maha Metro officials confirmed that groundwork is progressing on the PCMC-Nigdi and Swargate-Katraj extensions, with other proposals pending central clearance.

Maha Metro is working on PCMC-Nigdi and Swargate-Katraj Metro extensions. Updates from the Centre on the approvals for more routes are awaited according to officials.

If sanctioned, the upcoming projects are expected to reshape public transport in Pune, offering greater last-mile connectivity, easing traffic congestion, and fostering more sustainable urban mobility.
