Land acquisition for the Purandar International Airport near Pune has gathered momentum, with around 100 farmers reportedly stepping forward to offer their land following the announcement of a generous compensation plan by the Maharashtra government.
As per a Pune Pulse report, Pune District Collectorate officials said that farmers who voluntarily relinquish their plots will receive priority under a “first come, first serve” scheme for both monetary compensation and developed plots within the planned airport zone.
Authorities are optimistic that this initial show of consent will encourage more farmers across the project’s seven affected villages to follow suit.
The greenfield airport, which is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity, will require the acquisition of approximately 2,673 hectares spread across Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur, Udachiwadi, Munjwadi, Khanwadi, Pargaon Memane, and Vanpuri villages.
A high-level meeting chaired last week by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis finalised the details of the rehabilitation and compensation model.
Following the CM's directive, the District Collectorate has begun collecting consent letters from willing landowners.
About 50 hectares or nearly 125 acres have already been secured through these initial agreements.
In addition to the airport itself, 268 hectares (670 acres) of land nearby has been earmarked for a future aerocity.
As part of the rehabilitation strategy, original landowners will be eligible for up to 10 per cent land return in the aerocity development zone.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), acting as the project’s planning authority, will oversee the allocation of land for industrial, residential, and commercial use.
Officials clarified that the specific locations of returned plots to original landowners will also be decided by the MIDC.
