A new political entity, Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), was launched on Tuesday (14 January) in Punjab, led by jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
The announcement was made at a rally where a statement attributed to Amritpal, currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), was read out.
The statement declared the formation of the outfit as “the first step towards the resurgence of Akali politics.”
Amritpal’s father, Tarsem Singh, attended the event, along with Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, the son of one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The stage featured multiple photographs of individuals significant to Punjab’s radical political and militant history, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who spearheaded the Khalistan movement; his aide Amreek Singh; human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who was murdered; and Waris Punjab De founder Sandeep Singh, also known as Deep Sidhu.
The event also saw the passing of a 15-point resolution.
Among the key resolutions, Amritpal Singh was formally appointed as the ‘mukh sewadar’ (chief servant) of the newly formed outfit.
The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) aims to establish itself as a significant player in Punjab’s political landscape, drawing from the legacy of its radical leaders.
