Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday (23 September) announced major developments in Punjab’s railway network, including a new Vande Bharat train connecting Ferozepur Cantonment with New Delhi via Bathinda and Patiala, the Hindustan Times reported.
The train is slated to run six days a week, except on Wednesdays, providing faster and more convenient connectivity for passengers in the region.
In addition, Vaishnaw unveiled plans for a new 18-km Rajpura-Mohali railway line, with an estimated cost of Rs 443 crore. The project addresses a demand that has been pending for over five decades, aiming to enhance regional transport and spur economic growth.
Highlighting the government’s growing investment in Punjab’s rail infrastructure, Vaishnaw noted that funds increased from Rs 225 crore during 2009-14 to Rs 5,421 crore now.
He extended special thanks to Minister of State Ravneet Bittu, saying he deserves full credit for the project’s development.
The demand for the Rajpura-Mohali rail link has been pending for five decades. For this project, Railways will need 54 hectares of land, which the Punjab government has agreed to acquire and hand over to the Centre.
Vaishnaw also mentioned other key projects in Punjab, including the upgrade of Chandigarh railway station, which are expected to be completed by 2026-27.
With the new train and rail line, passengers from Ferozepur will gain faster and more convenient access to Delhi, while the Mohali-Rajpura link will strengthen regional connectivity.
These initiatives form part of a broader push to modernise railway infrastructure across Punjab, improve travel efficiency, and boost regional development.
