The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate G Lijin Lal and Congress candidate Chandy Oomen submitted their nominations for the Puthuppally bypoll today (17 August).
Lal submitted his nomination papers at the Pampady Block Development Office after an 8-kilometre long roadshow in which BJP state president K Surendran and Union Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan took part.
Lal is the BJP's Kottayam district president.
Chandy Oomen, the son of former chief minister Oomen Chandy, whose death necessitated the bypoll, also filed his nomination today.
The CPI(M) candidate, Jaick C Thomas, who had contested twice against Oomen Chandy in Puthuppally, submitted his nomination yesterday (16 August).
Thomas had reduced Chandy's victory margin from 27092 in 2016 to 9044 in 2021.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, while Oomen Chandy secured 48.08 per cent of votes, Jaick C Thomas secured 41.22 per cent. The BJP candidate N Hari finished third, receiving 8.87 per cent.
