Congress member of the Parliament (MP) Rahul Gandhi demanded the arrest of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani after he was indicted in New York for his alleged involvement in a multibillion-dollar bribery and fraud scheme.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday (21 November), Gandhi said, "Wherever there is corruption, investigation should be done. But investigation will begin with Adani. Unless he is arrested, it won't be credible. So, begin it from there."

However, the leader of the opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha dodged the question of allegations of briberies in those states which were ruled by the Congress then like Chhattisgarh and its ally Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.

"Arrest Adani, interrogate him and then nab whoever is involved. In the end, Narendra Modi's name will come out because BJP's entire funding structure is in his hands. So, even if the Prime Minister (PM) wants, he can't do anything," Gandhi added.

The Congress MP alleged that the country has been hijacked by Adani and is in his grip, citing Adani Group's involvement in country's ports, airports and defence industry. He accused PM Modi of defending Adani.

Gandhi reiterated the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate into allegations against the Adani Group. He expressed trust in American agency's claim that Rs 2,000 crore were given in bribes to government officials.

"It is now pretty clear and established in America that Mr Adani has broken both Indian law and American laws. He has been indicted in the US. I am wondering why Mr Adani is running around a free man in this country," he said referring to arrests of Chief Ministers.
