Preparations are underway in Rajasthan for the revival of the Vedic-Saraswati river.

A high-level meeting on Monday (28 April) at Jaipur's Birla Science Research Institute brought together top officials, scientists, and experts to discuss the ambitious project, according to IANS report.

The session saw participation from Rajasthan’s Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat, Deputy Chairman of the Haryana Saraswati Heritage Board Dhuman Singh Kirmich, and other key figures, including Mahavir Poonia, Head of the Remote Sensing Department, and Bhuvan Bhaskar, Chief Engineer, Water Resources Department, Rajasthan.

Retired ISRO Director J R Sharma and BK Bhadra also shared insights via video conference.

Dhuman Singh Kirmich presented Haryana’s work on Saraswati’s revival, detailing the substantial progress made.

The Saraswati river has historically flowed underground across western Rajasthan, said minister Rawat.

He added that under the leadership of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, in collaboration with the Haryana government, efforts are being made to rejuvenate this ancient watercourse for the benefit of farmers in drought-prone regions.

The revival of Saraswati is also part of Rajasthan’s broader strategy to safeguard interstate water resources.

A key development includes a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 9 December 2024, between Rajasthan’s Water Resources Department and the Embassy of Denmark during the Rising Rajasthan summit.

The MoU aims to revive Saraswati’s paleochannels, enhancing water security and environmental sustainability.

Additionally, support from the Central Ground Water Board, IIT-BHU, Central Arid Zone Research Institute (Jodhpur), and State Ground Water Departments has been secured to advance the project.
