Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman revealed an ambitious plan to invest $600 billion in the United States (US) over the next four years.
The announcement, made during a phone call with US President Donald Trump and reported by the state-run Saudi Press Agency on Thursday (23 January), reflects the kingdom’s commitment to bolstering economic and trade relations with the US.
“The crown prince affirmed the kingdom’s intention to broaden its investments and trade with the United States over the next four years, in the amount of $600 billion, and potentially beyond that,” the report stated.
While details on specific sectors were not provided, Saudi Arabia’s longstanding reliance on US-made defence systems and its growing interest in American businesses suggest these areas could be key beneficiaries of the pledge.
The investment announcement follows President Trump’s comments about potentially making Saudi Arabia his first foreign destination during his new term, echoing his 2017 visit.
Trump maintained close relations with Saudi Arabia, even after Prince Mohammed was implicated in the 2018 killing and dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.
Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification efforts are evident in this pledge, with the kingdom moving beyond oil exports to expand its sovereign wealth fund’s investments.
This initiative coincides with domestic priorities, including the $500 billion NEOM project, a futuristic city on the Red Sea, and infrastructure preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The financial commitment also reflects the kingdom’s strategy to offset budgetary pressures caused by fluctuating global oil prices, which have constrained revenues post-pandemic.
Expanding trade and investment ties with the US offers a way to ensure economic stability while maintaining strategic alliances.
