The Tripura government has taken decisive action following a security breach at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. Three police officers have been suspended, a senior officer reassigned, and seven individuals detained in response to Monday's (2 December) incident, which has heightened diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka.

The breach occurred during a large protest against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. Around 50 protesters entered the premises of the Bangladesh mission, drawing sharp criticism from Dhaka.

The interim government of Bangladesh alleged police inaction during the incident, expressing that the event had left their diplomatic staff with a "deep sense of insecurity." Dhaka has urged India to take "immediate action" to prevent further occurrences.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs termed the incident "deeply regrettable" and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding diplomatic and consular properties.

A statement assured that security at all Bangladeshi missions across India, including Agartala, would be enhanced promptly. Further it added “Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances.”

Tripura’s BJP-led government has launched an inquiry into the breach. Suspended officers include sub-inspectors Dilu Jamatia, Debabrata Sinha, and Joynal Hossain. Assistant Commandant Kanti Nath Ghosh has also been withdrawn for alleged negligence. Additional security personnel have since been deployed to the mission.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha condemned the incident, emphasizing the distinction between peaceful protests and unacceptable actions like the intrusion.

The diplomatic fallout comes amid growing strains in India-Bangladesh relations. Tensions have intensified following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina's government and reports of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. The arrest of monk Chinmoy Krishna Das has triggered widespread protests by groups expressing solidarity with Bangladesh’s Hindu minority.

India’s External Affairs Minister has called on Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure minority protection. In response, Dhaka has affirmed its commitment to preventing communal unrest.
