Eminent jurist and veteran senior Supreme Court advocate Fali Nariman passed away today (21 February) at the age of 95 at his residence in Delhi.
Nariman, a towering figure in the legal fraternity, was known for his numerous contributions to the field of law.
Beginning his career as a lawyer at the Bombay High Court, Nariman later relocated to Delhi, where he rose to prominence.
He was also appointed as the Solicitor General of India in 1972, but resigned from the post in 1975 to protest then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's declaration of Emergency.
Nariman was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, for his exceptional contributions to the legal profession.
In a post on X on Wednesday, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said it was "an end of an era".
"A living legend who wl (will) forever be in hearts &minds of those in law &publc life. Above all his diverse achievements, he stuck to his principles unwaveringly &called a spade a spade, a quality shared by his brilliant son," he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Nariman "among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals".
The PM added, "He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens. I am pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace."
