Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday (27 March) led the state legislative assembly in passing a resolution opposing the impending delimitation exercise, reported The Indian Express.

The resolution cited concerns over lack of transparency in the exercise and potential negative impact on political representation.

“The house expresses its deep concern on the manner in which the impending delimitation exercise is being planned, without transparent consultations with stakeholders.”- the resolution read, quoted as read by The Indian Express.

The resolution was adopted unanimously, reinforcing Telangana’s opposition to any changes that could compromise the political rights of its people.

Following the passage of the resolution, Revanth Reddy took to X to reaffirm his commitment to the cause.

“…We passed a resolution today asking the Centre not to take any steps that compromise the political self-respect and legitimate rights of our people. People of Telangana and citizens of all other states of south India are united in protecting our rights.”

He further added, “We will fight against all attempts to take away our rights. The first battle was won today. The war ahead is long, but we will eventually prevail.”

The resolution also highlighted concerns regarding past constitutional amendments (2nd, 84th, and 87th) that were intended to stabilise the national population. It argued that those objectives remain unfulfilled, making delimitation based on population data premature.

Instead, the Telangana Assembly suggested that the Centre should:

  • Retain the freeze on the number of parliamentary seats per state while redrawing constituency boundaries.

  • Increase SC/ST representation as per the latest population figures.

  • Introduce women’s reservation in parliamentary constituencies.

Another key demand in the resolution was the increase of Telangana’s assembly seats from 119 to 153, as promised in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
