In Telangana's Siddipet district, an innovative and sustainable solution to managing plastic waste, particularly disposable utensils, has emerged. This initiative, known as the Barthan Bank, was conceived during the Kanti-Velugu programme in 2022.

The Kanti-Velugu programme, a state-wide universal eye testing campaign, required daily food arrangements for 15-20 staff members at medical camps held across various villages.

This has been mentioned in the current year's Economic Survey published by the Finance Ministry's Department of Economic Affairs.

The Barthan Bank concept revolves around providing a range of steel utensils, including plates, spoons, glasses, bowls, and basins, which are stored collectively at the gram panchayat office. This creative approach aims to minimise the use of disposable plastic utensils and reduce the plastic waste generated in the district.

The initiative has yielded significant benefits. It has not only reduced the accumulation of plastic waste but also heightened community awareness about the harmful effects of plastic consumption. These effects include serious health issues such as cancer and digestive problems caused by the indirect consumption of microplastics.

Additionally, the Barthan Bank has created additional income sources for communities, self-help groups (SHGs), and gram panchayats. The funds generated are used for operational costs, maintenance, and the expansion of the initiative.

The impact of the Barthan Bank is evident in the reduction of plastic waste collection, dumping, and burning.

The initiative has led to an expected reduction of six to eight kilograms of plastic waste per event and 28 quintals per month. The success of the Barthan Bank in Siddipet has inspired its implementation in the local bodies of many other states.

This sustainable solution not only addresses the pressing issue of plastic waste but also fosters a sense of community responsibility and environmental stewardship.

As more regions adopt the Barthan Bank model, the positive environmental and health impacts are likely to multiply, setting a precedent for innovative waste management practices.
