Steve Jobs's Widow Laurene To Reside At Niranjani Akhara Camp In Maha Kumbh 2025, Earns Hindu Name 'Kamala’

Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, is set to immerse herself in the rich spiritual heritage of India by attending the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

The grand event, renowned as one of the world's largest spiritual congregations, began today (13 January) and is set to attract millions of pilgrims globally.

Powell Jobs, deeply inspired by Hindu traditions, will reside at the Niranjani Akhara’s camp under the guidance of Kailashanand Giri Maharaj, a prominent Hindu seer. During her visit, she was conferred the Hindu name "Kamala," symbolising her spiritual connection. 

Maharaj Kailashanand described her as “like a daughter” to the Akhara. “She is coming to visit her guru here... Everyone is welcome in Kumbh,” he told ANI.

Powell Jobs has actively engaged in Hindu practices, as evidenced by her visit to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, where she strictly adhered to temple customs and offered prayers for the Mela's success.

Her itinerary includes rituals at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, alongside possible participation in the holy dip at Sangam, a tradition believed to cleanse sins and grant salvation.

The Niranjani Akhara is also considering Powell Jobs' inclusion in the Peshwai procession, an auspicious ceremonial march of seers. 

Maharaj Kailashanand stated, “We will try to include her in the Peshwai. We will leave it to her to decide. She will tour this Kumbh and meet the seers here. She will also feel good, we will also feel good that those who don’t know much about our traditions want to learn."

Additionally, the event marks a significant moment for the Niranjani Akhara, with the induction of US-based disciple Maharshi Vyasanand as a Mahamandaleshwar, reflecting the growing global reach of Hindu spirituality.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, recognised as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage, continues to inspire individuals worldwide, and Powell Jobs' participation underscores the universality of its spiritual appeal.
