The North Central Railways (NCR) has taken a significant step toward transforming Prayagraj’s Subedarganj railway station into a major satellite hub for trains running on the busy Delhi-Howrah route, reported Times of India.
A new proposal from NCR, now awaiting final approval from the Railway Board, seeks to introduce a two-minute halt at Subedarganj for more than two dozen prominent trains, including those originating from Prayagraj Junction and others operating on the Howrah-Delhi trunk corridor.
Under the proposal, key trains such as the Prayagraj Express, Humsafar, Shivganga, Purushottam, Brahmaputra, Netaji Express, Mahabodhi, and Purva Express are expected to make brief stops at Subedarganj.
Notably, the high-speed Rajdhani Express and Vande Bharat Express are excluded from this list for now.
The move is designed to ease congestion at the heavily crowded Prayagraj Junction and offer more convenient travel options to residents of western Prayagraj and surrounding areas.
To accommodate the increased traffic, NCR has proposed the construction of two additional platforms at Subedarganj, raising the total from six to eight.
This follows the completion of two new platforms last year, as part of ongoing efforts to expand and modernise the station.
The station’s new building on the Rajrooppur side is nearly complete, with enhanced facilities such as reservation and enquiry offices, waiting rooms, and improved circulating areas.
According to the Times of India report, NCR Chief public relations officer Shashikant Tripathi stated that efforts are underway to strengthen Prayagraj's rail network.
The upgradation of Subedarganj station is expected to greatly enhance passenger convenience and pave the way for its emergence as a major railway hub. Once the proposal is implemented, rail travel in Prayagraj and nearby regions is set to improve significantly.
