The second phase of the Western Ring Road project in Coimbatore is expected to begin soon, with the Tamil Nadu Highways Department submitting a proposal to the state government seeking Rs 368 crore for its implementation, Times of India reported.
Phase I of the project, covering 11.80 km from Mylkal to Madampatti, is nearing completion and is likely to be finished by the end of August or early September.
Phase II will cover a 12.54 km stretch from Madampatti to Kanuvai, passing through West Chithiraichavadi, Kalikkanaickenpalayam, Vadavalli, and Somayampalayam.
According to a State Highways Department official cited in the ToI report, around 90 per cent of the land required for the second phase has been acquired.
The stretch passes through agricultural land. Once administrative approval is received, work is expected to start on clearing the stretch with the help of earth movers.
The phase II of the project is likely to commence in September this year, the official added.
The second phase will include 40 culverts, small bridges, and three vehicular underpasses.
The newly formed Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority will oversee this and the remaining phases of the project.
The department is also preparing to send a proposal for the third and final phase of the project.
This final stretch will run 8.09 km from Kanuvai to Narasimmanaickenpalayam and is estimated to cost Rs 220 crore.
It will include 24 culverts, small bridges, and two vehicular underpasses.
The state government had earlier sanctioned Rs 250 crore for Phase I of the project. The Western Ring Road is being developed to ease traffic congestion in Coimbatore.
Once completed, it will serve as an alternate route for vehicles, especially those travelling between Palakkad Road and Ooty, bypassing the city.
