The Erode–MGR Chennai Central Yercaud Superfast Express (Train No. 22650) was delayed on Tuesday night (17 June 2025) after hitting a 10-foot-long iron rod placed on the railway track near Magudanchavadi station in Salem district, The Hindu reported.
The train left Erode Junction at 9.01 pm and was near Kaligoundampalayam when it hit the object.
The train dragged the metal object for nearly 300 metres. The brake lining of the engine jammed, rendering the locomotive inoperable. All passengers were safe.
The obstruction was removed and a new engine was sent from Erode, and the train resumed its journey at 11.45 pm, causing a delay of about two hours.
Officials said the delay also affected other trains running on the same route.
The Yercaud Express reached Salem Junction 2 hours and 19 minutes late.
It finally arrived in Chennai at 7.30 am on Wednesday (June 18) nearly 4 hours behind schedule.
Police have started an investigation to find out who placed the iron rod on the track.
Railway officials are also doing an internal inquiry into the incident.
