Tata's Semiconductor Plant In Assam To Roll Out 'Made In India' Chips By 2026

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday (3 January) that Tata Electronics' semiconductor plant, which is under construction in Assam, is set to start producing “Made in India” chips by 2026.

These chips will be exported to multiple countries for use in the automobile and telecom sectors.

After a review of the project's progress, Vaishnaw said that it was a matter of pride that one of the world’s most advanced semiconductor industry was being set up in Assam.

"2026 - ‘made in India, made in Assam’ chips for the world!" Vaishnaw said in a post on X.

"Reviewed the construction plan and inspected progress at the Tata semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, Assam. PM Narendra Modi ji's vision is driving the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem. Laid the foundation stone of the Govt. of Assam Rs. 111 crore Water Supply Project for this plant and satellite township," he added.

“The semiconductor industry will play a vital role in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a developed India. It will be India’s largest semiconductor plant, located in Assam. The foundation of this initiative lies in the Prime Minister’s vision of developing the ‘Ashta Lakshmi’ States. Through this project, all our colleagues in the North East will get an excellent opportunity to be part of a future-ready industry,” he said.

Stating that a complete ecosystem was being around the plant, Vaishnaw said an electronic city was being constructed for providing residential facilities to about 40,000 employees.

“I also inspected the designs and plans for the plant, and I am happy to share that the construction work is progressing rapidly. I would like to thank the Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, for thoughtfully planning this entire project. The construction of this plant will be completed by 2025, and production will commence in 2026,” he said, The Hindu reported.

Vaishnaw noted that the “Made in Assam” chips would be supplied to automobile industries in countries such as Japan, the United States, and Germany.

He added that Assam’s participation in the ‘Made in India’ initiative would significantly enhance India’s global reputation.
