Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Sunday (10 August) that efforts are on for the trial run of the much-awaited Metro service in Thane in September, with full-fledged operations expected by December this year, reported Hindustan Times.
Speaking after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon, Shinde said, “Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing.”
He confirmed that preliminary work on Thane’s internal Metro network has already begun.
“This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities,” he added.
Shinde emphasised that once completed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will enjoy seamless Metro connectivity, offering last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions.
The deputy CM also highlighted broader infrastructure plans, noting that the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane will ease traffic congestion and divert services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) away from the city.
He revealed that the collector, municipal chief, and police commissioner have been tasked with making Thane traffic congestion-free.
“They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams,” he asserted.
Shinde cited the restoration of Jogila Lake, where authorities removed nearly 250 encroachments, as a unique achievement in the country.
