TMC MP Saugata Roy Advises Women Not To Go Out Late Amid Durgapur Row

TMC MP Saugata Roy sparked controversy by advising women not to go out late at night, amid the ongoing debate over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks on the Durgapur gangrape case, reported Hindustan Times.

Speaking on the rape of a medical college student from Odisha’s Jaleswar, Roy said the police can act only after incidents occur and urged women to exercise caution.

"Such cases are rare in Bengal. Women's safety in Bengal is better than in any other states...But women shouldn't leave their colleges at late hours as the police can't patrol everywhere," he told ANI.

Roy added, "The security cannot be provided at every inch. Police cannot be deployed on every road. Police can take action once the incident has unfolded...So, women should also be cautious."

Mamata Banerjee intensified the debate by questioning how the survivor was outside the campus at 12:30 am. She told the press, “She was studying in a private medical college... all the private medical are whose responsibility? How they came out in the night at 12:30?... It happened, so far I know, in the forest area... investigation is on.”

The incident triggered a political backlash, with the BJP and CPI(M) criticizing the TMC after Mamata advised female students to avoid venturing out late.
