The long-anticipated ropeway project in Wayanad has finally been greenlit. The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) has secured government approval to execute the ropeway project through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, according to a Mathrubhumi News report.

Developed in collaboration with the Western Ghats Development Limited and spearheaded by the Wayanad Chamber of Commerce, the ropeway is expected to offer a world-class travel experience while easing access to Wayanad’s high ranges.

The 3.9 kilometre ropeway will run from the base of the Wayanad Ghat near the first hairpin bend to the scenic hilltop of Lakkidi. It will traverse over a kilometre of forest land, and in compensation, five acres in Noolpuzha have been handed over to the Forest Department.

Forest clearance remains the last major hurdle, with efforts actively underway to obtain the necessary permissions.

The Rs 200 crore project includes not only the ropeway but also extensive tourism infrastructure. Terminal stations will feature a park, star hotel, cafeteria, amphitheatre, and an auditorium. Additionally, special bus services will connect Lakkidi with key tourist spots across Wayanad.

Key features include 40 air-conditioned cable cars, each with a 6–8 person capacity. Once operational, the system will transport up to 400 passengers at a time, reducing the arduous 45 minute ghat road journey to a swift 15–18 minutes. An ambulance cable car is also planned to improve emergency medical access for the hill district.

Initially proposed in 2017, the project received a boost during a review chaired by the Chief Secretary in October 2023, where KSIDC was formally directed to proceed under the PPP model. The ropeway now inches closer to realisation, promising to redefine travel and tourism in Wayanad.
