Kolkata Metro achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday (21 January) as the first trial run on the 2.63 km Sealdah–Esplanade stretch of the East-West Metro corridor was successfully conducted.
Metro Railway Kolkata confirmed the trial took place through the west-bound tunnel of the Green Line.
The trial commenced at 11.20 am from Sealdah Metro station and concluded at Esplanade Metro station at 11.31 am.
P Uday Kumar Reddy, Metro Railway General Manager and Chairman of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), observed the trial from the motorman’s cabin.
The trial run was closely monitored by Reddy alongside senior officers from Metro Railway and KMRCL.
Following the successful completion, Reddy congratulated the team and held a review meeting with officials at Esplanade Metro station.
Once operational, the Sealdah–Esplanade stretch will enhance connectivity between Sealdah and Howrah railway stations and other parts of Kolkata, providing seamless transit through the Esplanade underground metro station.
The East-West Metro corridor spans 16 km, connecting Howrah Maidan to Sector V. Currently, services are operational on the Howrah Maidan–Esplanade and Sealdah–Sector V stretches.
The entire corridor is expected to be fully operational later this year, significantly improving commuting options for residents and visitors.
The East-West Metro project is poised to link Kolkata's key transport hubs and reduce travel time across the city.
