US President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for halting a recent flare-up between India and Pakistan, asserting he brokered peace by leveraging trade relations.
In a post on his platform, Truth Social, on Sunday (15 June), Trump doubled down on his role in allegedly ending hostilities between India and Pakistan, while expressing confidence that he could also secure a peace deal between Israel and Iran.
“Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make, in that case by using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity into the talks,” Trump wrote.
He said the negotiations were aided by “two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP!”
This follows recent claims by Trump that his mediation led to the 10 May ceasefire between India and Pakistan following a brief but intense four-day period of drone and missile exchanges.
The clash, which began after the 22 April terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead, had prompted India’s launch of Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK.
However, Indian officials maintain that the de-escalation was achieved through direct military talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations of both nations, with no third-party involvement.
Trump also cited past instances during his presidency where he claimed to have brokered peace, including tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, and the Nile dam dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia. “There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention,” he said.
He concluded his post saying, “Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! … I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that's OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!”
