US President Donald Trump's recent meeting with Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir was reportedly driven by Munir’s suggestion to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with preventing a potential war between India and Pakistan.
According to news agency Reuters, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly on Wednesday said Trump hosted Munir after he called for the president to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing a nuclear war between India and Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters in Washington following their lunch meeting at the White House,, Trump said, "Reason I had him (Munir) here was I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it.”
"Prime Minister Modi just left a little while ago and we are working a trade deal with India and also with Pakistan... I am so happy. Two very smart people decided not to keep going with the war. Those are two big nuclear powers," he stated.
Trump reiterated his claim of having “stopped a war” between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
"Well, I stopped a war between Pakistan. I love Pakistan. I think Modi is a fantastic man. I spoke to him last night. We're going to make a trade deal with Modi of India. But I stopped the war between Pakistan and India," Trump said.
Notably, Prime Minister Modi has previously clarified that the May 2021 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was the result of direct military-level talks, without third-party intervention.
Meanwhile, senior US officials are reportedly preparing for a possible military strike on Iran in the coming days, according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the developments.
