President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday (5 September) that the United States will host the 2026 G20 summit at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami, revisiting a plan he once dropped during his earlier term amid allegations of corruption, SCMP reported.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump praised the Florida property as the perfect setting for the international meeting scheduled for next December.

He pointed to its proximity to the airport and warm climate, saying, “It’s going to be at Doral. Everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport, it’s the best location, it’s beautiful, a beautiful everything.”

The President dismissed suggestions that he would financially benefit from the arrangement.

“We will not make any money on it. We’re doing a deal where it’s not going to be money, there’s no money in it. I just want it to go well,” he said.

Trump added that the resort offered a practical solution given Miami’s crowded hotel market during the holiday season.

“Each country will have its own building. I think it will be really a beautiful thing," he said.

Trump’s announcement drew attention because of a similar episode in 2019, when he attempted to host the G7 summit at the same resort.

That proposal sparked backlash from Democrats, who labeled it “among the most brazen examples yet of the president’s corruption.”

Facing political heat, Trump abandoned the plan, blaming “media and Democrat crazed and irrational hostility.”

The summit never occurred after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The President also addressed the possibility of inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I would love them to, if they want to,” Trump said, while clarifying that their roles might be limited.

“They would be observers, and I’m not sure if they’d want to come as observers," he said, despite the fact that both Russia and China are G20 members.

Although born in New York, Trump has long made Florida his political home, maintaining residences at both Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach and the Doral resort near Miami.
