US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, accusing New Delhi of imposing some of the highest tariffs and toughest non-monetary trade barriers in the world. The new duties will come into effect from 1 August.
In what read like a temper tantrum over trade, Trump said the US has “done relatively little business” with India due to its “strenuous and obnoxious” trade practices.
He also took aim at India’s continued purchases of Russian military equipment and energy, calling them “not good” at a time when much of the world wants Moscow to end its war in Ukraine.
“India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 per cent, plus a penalty for the above,” Trump said.
The move marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between Washington and New Delhi and could complicate relations ahead of key strategic dialogues.
