US President Donald Trump sparked international uproar on Tuesday (27 May) after suggesting that Canada was “considering” joining the United States as its 51st state in exchange for free access to the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system, Fox News reported.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won a recent election in part due to opposition to Trump’s annexation remarks, reiterated that Canada is not for sale. Earlier this month, Carney stated bluntly, “won’t be for sale, ever.”
Meanwhile, King Charles III addressed Canadian lawmakers in Ottawa on Tuesday, delivering what was interpreted as a rebuke to Trump’s overtures.
“Canadians can give themselves far more than any foreign power on any continent can ever take away,” the monarch said, urging Canadians to stay true to their national values.
Trump’s remarks follow the unveiling of the “Golden Dome,” a US missile defence system comprising a vast satellite network to intercept ballistic threats.
The project is estimated to cost $175 billion and be operational within three years. Trump said Canada “has called us” about joining the initiative.
In response, Carney’s office acknowledged ongoing dialogue, confirming “active discussions” with the US on bolstering joint security through NORAD and related projects.
“These discussions naturally include strengthening [North American Aerospace Defense Command] and related initiatives such as the Golden Dome,” a spokesperson said to BBC News.
Despite Trump’s claim that Canada might accept US statehood in exchange for defence, Canadian leaders and public sentiment remain firmly opposed to any such arrangement.
