US President Donald Trump has warned that federal funds to New York City could be stopped if Democratic mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani “doesn’t behave himself” after winning the election, according to a report by Indian Express. Trump made the remarks in an interview with Fox News, calling Mamdani “a pure communist” and saying his victory would be “inconceivable.”
The remarks come amid a heated contest for the mayoralty, where Mamdani, a democratic socialist and State Assembly member, has pledged to increase taxes on wealthier neighbourhoods and high-income individuals. Trump said if Mamdani wins, “he’s going to have to do the right thing, or they’re not getting any money.”
According to the New York City Comptroller’s office, the city receives over 100 million dollar annually from the federal government through various programs.
Mamdani, speaking to NBC News, denied Trump’s accusation. “No, I am not” a communist," he said, adding that Trump was targeting his appearance and background to divert attention from policy issues.
He reaffirmed his commitment to “shift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners” by increasing taxes on incomes over 1 million dollar and aligning corporate tax rates with those in New Jersey.
The race remains competitive. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the Democratic race, is reportedly preparing to run as an independent. Mamdani remains a key contender but faces a tough Democratic primary battle at Gracie Mansion.
