Ukraine has accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States, covering the entire front line of its conflict with Russia, its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday (11 March), reported CNN.

The decision follows peace talks between Ukrainian and US officials in Saudi Arabia, marking a potential step toward de-escalation, especially after fiery exchanges between US President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office.

Speaking after an eight-hour-long meeting in Jeddah, Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine’s willingness to abide by the ceasefire.

However, he emphasised that the proposal could only take effect once Moscow agrees.

“Ukraine accepts this proposal, we consider it positive, we are ready to take such a step, and the United States of America must convince Russia to do so,” he was quoted as saying by CNN.

Following the discussions, the United States and Ukraine issued a joint statement, announcing that Washington would immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Kyiv.

A Ukrainian official later confirmed that US military aid had already restarted.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio placed the responsibility on Russia to reciprocate, saying, “We hope that they’ll say yes, that they’ll say yes to peace. The ball is now in their court”.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump welcomed the development, stating that he would soon discuss the proposal with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelenskyy outlined Ukraine’s expectations for the truce, including a halt to hostilities in the air, at sea, and on land, the release of Ukrainian prisoners to build trust and the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia.

Additionally, the two sides agreed to expedite a rare minerals deal aimed at boosting Ukraine’s economy and long-term security.

The Ukrainian delegation, which did not include Zelenskyy, met with US officials Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, both of whom had participated in direct talks with Russia last month.
