Amid rising number of deaths of Indian students in the United States, US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti has claimed that his country is committed to ensure that Indians know that it is a "wonderful place to study and be safe".

"Our heart always is touched when any tragedy occurs, whether it is a life taken by somebody or any violence - no matter who they are. We are very committed to making sure that Indians know that the United States is a wonderful place to study and to be safe," Garcetti told news agency ANI.

Garcetti noted that more Indians are studying in the US than any other country in the world.

"Over 2,00,000 visas were granted just last year," said Garcetti, who is serving as the 26th United States Ambassador to India since March 2023.

Garcetti's statement comes after deaths of multiple Indian and Indian-origin students in the US this year.

Two Indian nationals and three Indian-origin students have died in the US so far this year.

A 25-year-old Indian student named Vivek Saini tragically lost his life in Lithonia, Georgia, last month after being assaulted by a homeless person with a history of drug addiction.

In a separate incident, Shreyas Reddy, another Indian student, passed away in Cincinnati, with local officials stating that his death did not involve any "foul play".

Additionally, earlier in the week, Syed Mazahir Ali, an Indian student in Chicago, became the victim of a robbery attack.

A video doing rounds on social media videos showed him being pursued by three individuals on 4 February.

In a separate video, he was seen describing his ordeal with a bloodied nose and face and blood stains on his clothes.
