The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the construction of an access-controlled greenfield link expressway connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to the Ganga Expressway via Farrukhabad, at a projected cost of Rs 7,488.74 crore.

Planned on the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, the six-lane expressway (expandable to eight lanes) will run for nearly 91 km, starting from Kutral (Etawah) on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and ending at Sawaijpur (Hardoi) on the Ganga Expressway.

Officials confirmed that construction will be completed within 548 days, with a five-year maintenance clause built into the contract.

The new corridor will knit together three major highways — the Ganga Expressway (Meerut to Prayagraj), currently under construction; the Agra-Lucknow Expressway; and the Bundelkhand Expressway, which intersects the Agra-Lucknow stretch at Kutral.

By linking these routes, the government aims to create a grid of expressways.

Farrukhabad, located just 7 km from the proposed alignment, is expected to gain significantly from the project. The district is home to Sankisa, a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site also venerated by Jain followers.

Ashrams representing countries such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia, Japan, China, Singapore and Thailand are already established in the area, drawing lakhs of domestic and international tourists every year. Improved road access is expected to give religious tourism a major push.

Farrukhabad is also known for its Zardozi embroidery and silk printing, crafts that have long struggled to reach wider markets due to poor connectivity.

The government believes the new expressway will directly link the district with the national and state capitals, unlocking the commercial potential of the region.

The project is expected to generate an estimated 3.8 million man-days of employment, both direct and indirect, during the construction phase. No central government assistance is going to be involved, with the state handling the project independently.
