The Uttar Pradesh State Transport Department on Friday (8 August) cancelled 8,322 transport permits and suspended 738 others for 45 days in a sweeping road safety enforcement drive.

Officials cited violations including expired validity, exceeding age limits, and breach of statutory conditions, reported Hindustan Times.

The State Transport Authority (STA), in its 7 August meeting, also revoked three permits linked to fatal crashes, each claiming four to five lives, and imposed a one-year ban on fresh issuance to the concerned operators.

The STA issued notices to 1,200 permit holders whose documents expired over seven years ago without renewal, while disposing of pending applications in line with the Motor Vehicles Act.

“These decisions of the State Transport Authority have been taken keeping road safety, passenger interest, and environmental protection paramount. There will be strict action on rule violations, while service continuity will also be ensured by approving permits on essential routes. All operators are expected to fully comply with legal provisions and permit conditions,” Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh was quoted as saying by PTI.

To curb vehicular pollution in the NCR, the STA mandated that from 1 November 2025, only BS-VI CNG, LNG, or electric goods vehicles can enter. From 1 November 2026, buses must run on CNG, electricity, or BS-VI diesel.

Authorities directed strict enforcement of school vehicle safety norms and cancelled 11 letters of intent for non-compliant Accredited Driving Training Centres. The STA also proposed integrating a NIC-developed VAHAN 4.0 module to track vehicle operations, driver hours, and route details for inspections.
