The Ministry of Railways has announced that work on the South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone headquarters in Visakhapatnam is in progress.

The project, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 183.58 crore, will be built on 52.2 acres of land at Mudasarlova, handed over by the Andhra Pradesh government in August 2024.

The tender for the construction of the zonal headquarters office building has been awarded, and work has commenced. A General Manager for the SCoR has already been appointed to oversee operations.

"The work of “Setting up of South Coast Railways’ Zone HQ” has been sanctioned at latest estimated cost of ₹183.58 crore. Tender for construction of zonal headquarters office building has been awarded. The work has been taken up. General Manager of SCoR has been appointed," Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Friday (9 August).

The SCoR Zone comprises the Guntakal, Guntur, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam (Waltair) divisions, covering Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

The network connects mineral-rich regions and several major eastern coast ports, including Visakhapatnam, strengthening freight corridors and enhancing cargo handling from Andhra Pradesh’s ports.

The foundation station of new South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone in Visakhapatnam was laid in January by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi had highlighted the importance of this development for Andhra Pradesh, fulfilling a long-standing demand for a separate railway zone.

The Prime Minister had said that the establishment of the South Coast Railway Zone headquarters will expand agricultural and trade activities in the region, and provide new opportunities for tourism and the local economy.
