‘War Shouldn’t Feed Egos’: IAF Chief Explains Why India Ended Operation Sindoor Conflict Early

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh on Thursday (18 September) said India chose to end its military conflict with Pakistan after Operation Sindoor once its core objectives were achieved, stressing that “war should not feed egos,” the Hindustan Times reported.

Speaking at an event, the Chief of the Air Staff said some people wanted the fighting to continue after Indian forces launched retaliatory strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) in May.

“We met objectives,” he said, referring to the action that followed the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people.

“The main wars that are going on today, be it Russia, Ukraine or the Israel war. They are going on, years have passed, because no one is thinking about conflict termination...We heard that people said that no, we should have done a little more. We stopped the war very quickly. Yes, they were on the back foot, no doubt, but what were our objectives?” Singh said.

He said the objective had been anti-terrorism and that the forces had to — and did — strike the targets. He asked why the conflict should continue once those objectives were met.

He warned that prolonged fighting carries a heavy price, harming preparedness for future operations and damaging the economy, according to clips shared by ANI.

Singh said India had shown “how to start and terminate a conflict at the earliest possible opportunity,” adding, “Egos are coming in between… the world has to learn this lesson from India.”

Earlier, CDS Gen Anil Chauhan said the 7 May strikes were conducted between 1 am and 1:30 am to minimise civilian casualties. India has maintained that Operation Sindoor is paused, not over, and warned of retaliation if provoked.
