Amid the ongoing cases of sexual assault and land grabs against local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in Sandeshkhali, another TMC leader has been detained for allegedly molesting a minor girl.

The island town of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district came into controversy in February this year after which now-expelled TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh was arrested.

The latest arrest comes after the girl's mother filed the complaint and accused the TMC leader of "somehow" entering their house on Friday (17 May) night and molesting the girl.

The girl studies in class 8. She managed to escape when the accused barged in and shouted for help. Subsequently, the neighbours and family members came.

The accused is around 20 years of age and is being questioned by the Basirhat District Police. The girl was taken for the medical test and the report is awaited.
