West Bengal Police Arrests Student For 'Threats' To Mamata Banerjee, Continues Action Against Protesters In Kolkata Case

Amid the action of West Bengal Police against protestors of Kolkata trainee doctor rape and murder case, a second-year B.Com student was arrested for allegedly posting a "provocative" social media message against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to the police, the student is accused of inciting hatred and promoting criminal behavior by allegedly urging others to assassinate the CM.

The police received a complaint that the student shared three Instagram stories about the rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, reportedly revealing the victim's identity.

Kolkata police officials stated, "The accused also posted two stories targeting the West Bengal CM, which contained offensive comments and threats to her life." The investigation into the matter is ongoing, they added.

The student has been charged under BNS sections 351 (2), 353(1), and 352, related to intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, and sections 72 and 79, which pertain to words, gestures, and actions intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

In addition, Kolkata Police issued notices to seven SFI-DYFI leaders for questioning over sharing information about the RG Kar Medical College case. Another notice was sent to a doctor for "spreading misleading information," with all parties required to appear on Monday.

As part of efforts to address the unlawful disclosure of the victim's identity and the "spread of misinformation" on social media, Kolkata Police have also summoned two prominent doctors and a senior BJP leader to appear at police headquarters.
