Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday (6 May) promised to increase the reservation over the current limit of 50 per cent, while speaking in the Scheduled Tribe-reserved constituency of Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh.

"Leave the talks of snatching reservations aside, we are going to increase reservations above 50 per cent. We will remove the 50 per cent limit implemented by the court," the Congress leader said.

"We will give the amount of reservation required by the Dalits, Adivasis, Backwards and poor," Gandhi promised while alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to remove the Constitution.

"He (Modi) wants to snatch all of your rights. This is their goal and we are trying to stop him. All the rights that the Adivasis, Backwards and Dalits get, are due to this (Constitution)," Gandhi said.

"BJP leaders have said very clearly that if they come to power, they will put this book aside. This is why they have given a slogan of 400 seats. They are not going to get even 150 seats," the Congress leader said.

Gandhi also alleged that the BJP leaders have been saying that they will take away the reservation from Adivasis, Dalits and Backwards.

Interestingly, similar accusations are made by the BJP leaders against Congress as they say that Congress wants to give quota to Muslims by cutting into reservations of SCs, STs and OBCs.

"Congress wants to take away reservation from SC, ST, and OBC and give it away to Muslims based on religion, by changing the Constitution," Modi has alleged.
