Hours before ending of the nomination deadline for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday (3 May) filed his nomination from the Raebareli seat.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leaders Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were present as Rahul Gandhi submitted the nomination papers at the district magistrate's office.
Early this morning, the Congress announced its candidates for two high-profile seats - Amethi and Raebareli.
Putting an end to speculation that Rahul Gandhi may be fielded from Amethi, a seat he has represented thrice in Lok Sabha, the Congress picked Kishori Lal Sharma for the seat and the Gandhi family scion has been fielded from Raebareli.
While the Gandhi family and Congress chief accompanied Rahul Gandhi in Raebareli, Kishori Lal Sharma filed his nomination from Amethi seat without much fanfare as no top party leaders were present as he submitted his nomination papers.
It should be noted that the Raebareli seat was earlier held by Rahul's mother Sonia Gandhi.
Following Congress' announcement to field Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress leader.
PM Modi said that fearing defeat from Kerala's Wayanad seat, Rahul Gandhi decided to contest Lok Sabha polls from Raebareli.
He also took a jibe on Gandhi for running away from Amethi, a seat from where the Congress leader was defeated by BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
