The Assam government has commenced the tendering process for the ambitious ropeway project linking Kamakhya Railway Station to the historic Kamakhya Temple, The Assam Tribune reported.
Speaking to the media following a visit to the temple on Saturday (28 June), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Much work has already been done on the ropeway from Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple. There is also another ropeway project planned from Sonaram Field to the temple. Work is underway on both.”
The ropeway originating from the railway station is scheduled for completion first, followed by the Sonaram Field route.
“The process took some time as we had to acquire land from the temple authorities. But things are now moving fast, and the project should be completed soon,” he added.
Sarma also disclosed that feasibility studies are underway for additional ropeway projects at Barak Bhuban Tirtha and Biswanath Umataloni.
“The Centre has shown great interest in expanding ropeway connectivity in the Northeast. These projects will boost tourism and provide better accessibility to some of the region’s key religious and cultural sites,” he said.
Costing Rs 201 crore, the 1.43 km ropeway will directly connect the railway station to the Nilachal Hills, easing the journey for thousands of pilgrims.
Once operational, it is expected to cut travel time by up to 60 per cent for train travellers heading to the temple.
Designed to handle 1,000 passengers per hour in each direction, the ropeway journey will last about seven minutes.
The National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) floated tenders on 24 June for its design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
In addition to improving accessibility, the project will expand the open space around the temple from 3,000 sq. feet to nearly 100,000 sq. feet across three tiers, transforming the temple precincts.
The state government has set June 2026 as the target date for completion.
